DESCRIPTION: We offer in house skin biopsies done personally by the allergist. A small punch or shave biopsy will be done to retrieve a sample of the skin. The specimen will be submitted to a pathologist to help provide information that will aid in diagnosis and management.
CONDITIONS: Skin biopsies will aid in the management and/or diagnosis of different skin rashes.
Will the skin biopsy hurt?
A local anesthetic (e.g. lidocaine) is injected at site of where the biopsy is going to be done. This minimizes any pain that is felt during the biopsy.
What the risks of getting a skin biopsy?
Skin biopsies are generally very safe but some minor complications such as bleeding, scarring, bruising or an infection may occur. Sterile techniques are used during the procedure.
